Central Grocery's specialty is the muffaletta, which they claim to have originated. While the claim is disputable, the muffalettas are good.
Being more of an old-time Italian deli than a restaurant, seating is limited. If the weather is nice, order your sandwich to go and eat in nearby Jackson Square or Woldenberg Park along the river.
In addition to muffalettas, various bottled and canned beverages are available as are specialty meats and Italian delicacies including olives, anchovies, and fine oils.

There is just a special aroma to this place. I like to just walk around it looking at everything. It is an old-fashioned market, and it seems to take you back in time. The muff's are fantastic and HUGE. We usually just buy 1. I eat 1/4 and he eats 3/4. You can get a glass of wine there, too, and sit on the levy of the Mississippi River to eat. |
